You can choose from a variety of technical fabrics, or wool-based natural materials such as Merino. One of the most critical factors with a road jersey is fit. Most are designed for a close fit to prevent wind flap. You want the jersey to fit correctly when you’re in the riding position, which makes it different from a normal top. An extended tail helps cover your lower back when riding. Most have an elastic hem with some sort of grippers on the inside to keep the jersey in place and prevent wind from blowing up it.

Mountain bike jerseys are often designed to pair with baggy shorts, and they typically have a looser fit. Consider whether you ride with a hydration pack, in which case you might not want or need rear pockets. Or, if you don’t use a hydration pack, you might want zippered pockets to secure keys or other valuable items while out on the trail.
